Ready to add some serious adventure to your summer? Join Marty’s Reliable Cycle for a Bikepacking Weekend!
70mi each day. Rain and/or shine!
Leaving from Marty’s Reliable Cycle 251 Main St. Hackettstown, NJ Saturday July 15th 8am
Camping at Promised Land State Park Saturday Night
Returning to Hackettstown Sunday evening July 16th
Registration – fee includes 2 day guided bike packing tour, light mechanical support, campsite, endless photo opportunities and priceless bonding with fellow adventure-loving cyclists! No SAG support.
Route consists of 70% pavement (some more maintained than others), 20% dirt/gravel road, 10% woods road/light singletrack. Several very steep climbs on woods road where some may dismount. Some trail unmaintained, can be a bit overgrown.
Requirements for maximum enjoyment:
-A love of adventure. Do not register if you are dismayed by the idea of: no cell reception, general stores with more live bait than lotto tickets, rugged roads, waiting a bit for slower folks, the possibility of flat tires in deep woods, porcupine sightings, and unscripted detours!
-Cyclocross or gravel bike is the best choice. Disc brakes are helpful. Plus tire or mountain bikes will slay the woods but may be less than enjoyable on the roads.
-700x32c tire minimum recommended (although intrepid and determined riders have completed this route with 25c slicks)
-Rear rack and panniers. This setup will carry all the gear listed below, and in my experience rear weight handles better on the bike than front racks. That being said, Salsa, Blackburn, and a few other brands offer handlebar mounted rack systems, seatbag packs, and frame bags that you may find a sufficient alternative.
-Packable tent with rain fly, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (thermarest)
-Small stove for heating water and camp food (optional, mandatory if you love coffee)
-Snacks for riding 70 miles both days, heatable camp food for dinner and breakfast (we can stop at small stores where necessary, see note on rest stops below).
-Backpacking utensils and mess kit
-2 full size water bottles and auxiliary bottle if possible
-Toiletry items. Campground has showers available.
-Front headlight (can double as camp flashlight), rear blinky
-Flat kit, several tubes, co2/pump, chain master link, multi tool, zip ties, electrical tape
-Change of clothes and packable shoes for camp/sleeping
-Fresh riding kit
-Rain gear (waterproof booties can be helpful)
-Garmin/phone/device charger – if needed the park has charging stations by the bathrooms.
Rest stops include several convenience stores along the route as well as in the Promised Land park area. However, due to unpredictable ride times and rural area stores don’t count on anything being open for dinner, bring enough fuel for the “worst case scenario”
Pace/structure – Intermediate road pace. This would translate to ~16mph on road bikes. We will be going a bit slower due to loaded bikes, more rugged terrain, and a desire to enjoy the scenery and stop as necessary. We will regroup as needed after tough sections, but have to keep a moderate pace to give enough time to set up camp in the daylight. Be mindful of your fitness level as this is a demanding route with tough climbs and rough terrain requiring good bike handling skills, with enough energy left over to set up your campsite and most importantly enjoy yourself!
Ridewithgps route can be downloaded to compatible Garmin and phone apps, but remember you will not always have service and a few of the woods roads are very hard to find just following a map. Ride on your own at your discretion, but be responsible for finding your way.
Day 1 Hackettstown to Promised Land 68 miles/6000 ft climbing
