Maxxis Ravager 40: Fresh Gravel- by Guitar Ted
Maxxis is a well known and respected bicycle tire brand amongst mountain bikers. The brand has ventured off into more niche corners of cycling of late with offerings in the gravel (Rambler) and fat bike market. Now after the successful launch of the Rambler which we reviewed here, we have received the newest tire in this category, the Ravager 40mm tire.
Maxxis is saying that this new Ravager 40mm tire is a “tire for the riders out there willing to brave aggressive terrain with only their drop bars and a tiny amount of rubber beneath them.” This seems to be a general trend that we’ve seen since the industry trade shows for how the marketing of gravel/all road bikes and components is being presented. That being a niche where “mountain biking meets road biking”. So, Maxxis seem to see that as a call for a tire that has some of the biggest cornering knobs on a gravel road tire since the Bruce Gordon Rock and Road tire. In fact, Maxxis calls this model a tire which is, “Optimal for off-road touring and adventures. ” The BG Rock and Road tire was the original gravel road/off-road touring tire, and now the new Ravager seems to be positioned as a modern day take on that classic tread design. So, a “skinny mtb tire” or a modern day classic rough road touring tire, or both? That’s something we’ll be taking a look at with this review.
The Ravager is listed as a 40mm tire with two variants available. One- A 120TPI model with Maxxis’ TR (tubeless ready) and EXO sidewall protection technologies. Then there is a 60TPI option with the TR and EXO technology as well as the under the tread flat protection which Maxxis calls “Silk Sheild”. Both variants feature dual compound tread and foldable beads. Claimed weight is 485 grams for the 120TPI tire and 530 grams for the 60TPI tires.

Any idea if the bead is carbon like the Rambler? The Maxxis site just states “foldable.”
