Had we told you in 2019 that an event with these protocols could be called a ‘success’, you may have sneered at such draconian measures being seen in that light. However; the unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley ended up being one of the very few high profile gravel events happening at all in 2020.

The inaugural Salty Lizard 100 by Salty & Stupid Cycling happened on Saturday, Oct. 3, against all the odds, in the teeth of a global pandemic, and in defiance of a relentless recession in Wendover, UT/West Wendover, NV. But it happened – it happened – and when the dust settled, a new gravel destination emerged, emptied the moon-dust out of its shoes, and passed out in a lawn chair with an unopened Coke in hand.

The Pennsylvania countryside in Fall is supposed to be a beautiful thing, or so I have been told. I would know, but an unfortunate family health issue prevented me from attending the second unPAved of the Susquehanna River Valley event. Oh well, that’s how it goes sometimes. The good news is that the team there in Pennsylvania has decided to do it all again this coming Fall.

Just off the Front Range of Colorado, this event in Gering, Nebraska focuses on the unsung gravel terrain of the Old West. The Robidoux Quick & Dirty will be held on June 20, 2020. The event features 25, 65, and 100 mile routes.

Anyway, here is an event which has a very grass roots feel and all it takes to get in is for you to send Dan a post card with the required information and then when you come, he asks you to donate $40.00 in the pickle jar5 which helps support local trails. Otherwise, as Dangerous Dan says, “You do you”.

The Rocktown Rambler is a celebration of riding backcountry roads in the Shenandoah Valley. There will be gravel, some climbing, some descending, some singletrack, and a lot of fun! We welcome everyone that wants to have a good time – whether that is by racing, riding, or partying (or doing all three at once)! The Rambler is yours to enjoy!
